Microsoft’s Exchange team released Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 SP3 this week, with 20 fixes for customer-reported issues since the release of Rollup 3 in April.
Meanwhile, Exchange 2010 hit maturity with Service Pack 1 almost a year ago, and Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 4 was released in June.
But email servers are mission critical and migrations often take months or years to complete, so even customers moving forward with new Windows Server operating systems maintain legacy email platforms. This is particularly true for Exchange 2007, which is so popular that Microsoft reversed a policy against supporting it in Windows Server 2008 R2 due to customer demand.
“Although Exchange 2007 has been generally available for over four years, it is likely that a significant portion of the Exchange customer base still has Exchange 2007 deployed and has not moved to the Exchange 2010 product that was released about a year and a half ago,” said Rob Sanfilippo, an Exchange analyst with Kirkland, Wash.-based Directions on Microsoft.
For that reason, Microsoft must continue publishing timely updates. The company will release Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack in August 2011.
Exchange 2007 SP3 Rollup 4
The fixes in Rollup 4 addresses quirks with Mac clients, Outlook Web Access, problems with mobile phones synched with Exchange 2007 and more.
Specifically, it fixes the issue where end users’ mobile phones time out when using ActiveSync to synchronize the calendar on the phone with an Exchange Server 2007 mailbox. It also fixes problems with calendaring, where individuals are wrongly displayed as a meeting organizer after synchronizing meetings using a mobile device with Exchange Server 2007.
Some Outlook Web Access (OWA) issues this rollup corrects include the “could not connect to a directory server” error message received when users click the last page button in the search results in Exchange Server 2007 OWA. Also, spell checking doesn’t work correctly in OWA when an S/MIME control is used and SSL Offloading is enabled in Exchange Server 2007, and it corrects the (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484147/ ) “HTTP Error 400 Bad Request” message when using OWA to log on to a newly created Exchange Server 2007 mailbox.
Additional problems resolved in this rollup are the inability to synchronize a folder hierarchy by using Outlook for Mac 2011 in an Exchange Server 2007 SP3 environment and EWS applications not connecting to Exchange Server 2007 servers after changes are made on accepted domains.
Microsoft also fixed the error message issue when admins run certain commands in the EMS on an Exchange Server 2007 server and more.
